Reader Question: Oily Skin

13 Mar

me and my GORGEOUS mom with FLAWLESS skin!

I received a great question from a loyal reader the other day:
“I tried your recommendation and not wash my face in the morning, but that + daily moisturizer w/ SPF = breakout. Any recommendations for skin that may be oilier than yours??”

Her question made me realize that I didn’t disclose my skin type when I shared my regimen! Aside from having sensitive skin, my skin type is “normal” (lucked out on that one!).

Skin type makes a HUGE difference in what will work best for you. The golden rule when it comes to skin care is: Don’t fight your skin too much. This means that if you have oily skin, don’t use products with too much alcohol (or other ingredients that will dry your skin out a lot) because while it might work for a couple days, you skin will freak out and produce even more oil in retaliation.

But you have to keep your skin in check somehow, right? My brilliant mom weighed in with this suggestion:
Wash in the morning with a gentle cleanser, then toner, then moisturizer with SPF. Use the olive oil makeup remover in the evening—it takes oil to remove oil completely.

I think she’s right on the money. The hardest part, though, is selecting your toner. Toners can range from having little to no alcohol to having quite a bit. I use astringent (which is a high alcohol content toner) as spot-treatment for acne at night. Using more than that will dry my skin out too much. But someone with oily skin might benefit from using a light coating of toner on their face every day. And if you wash with a harsh cleanser instead of a gentle one, skip the toner!

Of course, no regimen will work for everyone of the same skin type, and experiments and modifications are bound to be necessary. So come back and share them!
